There I was this morning having a browse through a small book fair in Bournemouth and came across a couple of gems that I immediately purchased. One of them being Meatball Sundae by marketing guru Seth Godin – I will be having a good read of this tomorrow – and the other Happy Hair Days by Philip Kingsley – a small hardback book with 50 tips for healthy hair.
I thought over the next few weeks I would add some of the tips here and emphasize on them a little. Doing some research online I came across so many explanations and advice about how to keep your hair healthy and many conflicting opinions. Philip Kingsley has been in the business of hair for over 50 years and has built a longstanding clientele that range from famous celebrities to politicians. His clients range from Mick Jagger, Laurence Olivier, Sigourney Weaver, Candice Bergen, and Audrey Hepburn. As Anna-Marie Solowij from Vogue stated:
“His client list reads like a roster of the most gorgeous heads of hair in the world.”
I figured following Philip Kingsley’s tips with a bit of added affordable knowledge would do no harm and I am going to start implementing some of the ideas that I will be reading about.
Sound Diet for a Healthy Head of Hair
We all know as we get older our hair starts to lose that lovely sheen and bounce we had as children. For men we start to thin and in some cases lose our hair. Thankfully the stigma has all but disappeared about going bald and a good hairdresser can make you look like great even with the smallest amount of hair.
One of the factors of keeping your existing hair strong and healthy is diet and how we eat. It is something we overlook and we do not generally associate with hair. But like almost every part of the body, diet plays a significant role in not only how we feel but also how we look and this includes our scalps and hair.
I admit I am no expert here and have broken the rules of a good diet more times than I can wave a stick at. It is only in the last year that I have been changing the way my body and I do business. It is an on-going collaboration to repair the years of smoking, fatty foods, over-eating, not eating enough, or eating at the wrong times, no exercise and thinking all is okay. My current hair has thinned at the back and a little at the temples. Being tall conceals it well but I am still very aware of it and I am making changes in my lifestyle that will enhance the existing hair I do have. Of course one of these factors is diet and exercise which I will cover in another entry.
Getting back to Philip Kingsley and his tips for healthy hair, the first one I found relevant is:
“Shampoo your hair daily. You take your hair to the same places you take your face…”
I get the message and I am now adding this to my daily routine. The question is which shampoo a man should use for his daily shampooing. In this case I have opted – as I just purchased recently – to use Philip Kingsley Body Building Shampoo this will give my hair a well needed lift and add a little bounce. I will not be using this shampoo exclusively as I have a large bottle left of American Crew Daily Moisturising Shampoo to get through. The two shampoos are different. I do like the American Crew product as it treats my hair well when it gets too dry from being in the sun and sea and as I only live about five minutes from one of the UK’s most beautiful beaches – I find myself often going down for a quick dip.
I will be adding other quotes and tips from the book in the coming weeks ahead.
Virgil, am interested to know whether or not you really notice any difference in the condition of your hair now that you are shampooing on a daily basis?
I would be interested to hear more about food in your diet that improves the condition of one’s hair, so if you feel inspired please share with us all.
